Case 01
Goal: I can introduce myself as a family-history learner and turn an unknown into a respectful question.
Gather: Workbook pages 3–6 · Pencil or colored pencils · Envelope or small box for the time capsule
Care note: Learners may use the fictional family for any prompt. Never require disclosure about adoption, estrangement, loss, or an unknown relative.
Case 02
Goal: I can plan a respectful interview, listen for details, and summarize without pretending certainty.
Gather: Workbook pages 10–19 · Pencil and extra paper · A willing adult-approved interview partner
Care note: No recording is required. Ask before recording or quoting, stop when requested, and keep living-person stories private unless the speaker clearly agrees otherwise.
Case 03
Goal: I can identify a family document, separate observations from guesses, and protect the original.
Gather: Workbook pages 22–29 · Pencil · Adult-selected copies or safe household documents
Care note: Adults choose all real documents. Keep passports, Social Security cards, adoption records, financial records, medical records, and living-person identifiers out of the activity.
Case 04
Goal: I can place people on a four-generation pedigree and turn a blank into a researchable question.
Gather: Workbook pages 32–38 · Pencil and eraser · Adult-approved family names or the fictional family
Care note: A biological pedigree is one research convention, not a measure of belonging. Learners may map chosen family, use the fictional case, or leave any relationship private.
Case 05
Goal: I can record my question, source, result, confidence, and next step so another person can follow my work.
Gather: Workbook pages 41–45 · Pencil · Two sources already used or the fictional examples
Care note: Do not put account passwords, living-person identifiers, DNA data, or private document numbers in the research notebook.
Case 06
Goal: I can decode census headings, cite visible evidence, and distinguish a fact from an inference.
Gather: Workbook pages 48–56 · Pencil and ruler or index card · Workbook census sample or an adult-selected public record
Care note: Use the supplied sample whenever a real-family search is uncomfortable or inaccessible. Adults control external accounts and living-person information. Historical labels need context and are not endorsements.
